In einem ganz elementaren Sinn erprobt Renate Anger
die Möglichkeiten der Malerei, ihre Eigenmacht, ihre Souveränität.
In aller Klarheit und tagheller Konzentration auf das Wesentliche baut
sich in ihren Arbeiten der Bildort auf, ein Ereignis aus Farb- und Formelementen
von leuchtender oder opaker Intensität. Die bewegende Energie der
Malerei antwortet auf das Material, auf eine räumliche Situation,
die Bilder verschränken sich mit ihrem Grund, eröffnen und entfalten
vielfache Bezüge in einer subtilen Balance, die nie erstarrt.
Auflösung und Verdichtung, Farbgewicht und der Klang der Farbe sind
unabschließbare Potentiale, ziehen
in das Bildgeschehen hinein in großer Freiheit.

Lives & Works 4. It’s a summer day,
and I want to be wanted more than anything else in the world.
Zählen, messen und markieren sind grundlegende
Bestandteile der Kunst und des Interesses von
Micah Lexier.
Die 2005 begonnene Lives & Works Serie ist ein sich weiter entwickelndes
und ausdehnendes Projekt,
das oft die handgeschriebenen Markierungen des Künstlers umfasst,
welche mittels Laser aus Stahl geschnitten und an bemalten Wänden
befestigt werden. Für diese Ausstellung hat Lexier eine einfache
Installation geschaffen, die den Raum auf sparsamste Art belebt und gleichzeitig
seine Faszination für Organisationssysteme und Variation verdeutlicht.
Unter Benutzung von Pfeilen, die paarweise präzise an den Wänden
der Galerie und in den Ecken des Raums platziert sind, kreiert Lexier
eine Arbeit, welche Albert Einsteins Ausspruch veranschaulicht: „Alles
sollte so einfach wie möglich gemacht sein, aber nicht einfacher“.
Obgleich scheinbar hermetisch, ist die organisatorische Struktur des Werks
überraschend zugänglich. Im Einklang mit Lexiers neuer Praxis
werden die Kunstwerke in der Galerie durch begleitende Ephemera mit Leben
erfüllt und näher erläutert, in diesem Falle mittels einer
dreiteiligen Einladung und einer gedruckten Handreichung.
Der Untertitel der Ausstellung „It’s a summer day, and
I want to be wanted more than anything else in the world“ [Heut’
ist ein Sommertag, und ich will, dass man mich mehr will als alles Andere
auf der Welt] ist
die letzte Zeile des 1954 entstandenen Gedichts Homosexuality
von Frank O’Hara. Jede der Lives & Works Ausstellungen
ist mit einem Auszug aus einem Lied oder Gedicht untertitelt, wodurch
mit der Zeit eine Sammlung jener Gedanken anderer Menschen geschaffen
wird, welche ein Echo im Künstler ausgelöst haben. Die emotionale
Natur des Untertitels der Ausstellung wird in krassem Gegensatz zur Nüchternheit
des Werks dargestellt und grenzt so die Bandbreite des Stoffs ab, welcher
unter die Lives & Works Rubrik fällt.

In a quite elementary sense, Renate Anger tries
out the possibilities of painting, its own power, its sovereignty.
In her works, the focal point builds up in all clarity and with a lucid
focus on the essential; a sensation of coloured shapes with vibrant or
opaque intensity. The moving energy of painting responds to the material,
to a spatial situation; the pictures entangle with their base, disclose
and unfurl multiple connections in a subtle balance that never freezes.
Dissolving and compacting, the weight and sound of colour hold endless
potential and occupy the pictorial space with greater freedom.

Lives & Works 4. It’s a summer day,
and I want to be wanted more than anything else in the world.
Counting, measuring and marking are fundamental
components of Micah Lexier’s art and interest.
Begun in 2005, the Lives & Works series is an evolving and expanding
project often encompassing the artist’s handwritten marks, which
are laser-cut from steel and mounted on painted walls. For this exhibition
Lexier has created a very simple installation that animates the space
in the most economical way, at the same time that it illustrates his fascination
with systems of organization and with variation. Utilizing pairs
of arrows precisely placed on the gallery walls and in the corners of
the room, Lexier creates a work that illustrates Albert Einstein’s
dictum “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not
simpler”. Seemingly hermetic, the works organizational structure
is surprisingly accessible. In keeping with Lexier’s recent practice
the artwork in the gallery is animated and expanded upon by accompanying
ephemera, in this case a three-part invitation and a printed handout.
The subtitle of the exhibition “It’s a summer day, and
I want to be wanted more than anything else in the world” is
the final line from the 1954 poem Homosexuality by Frank O’Hara.
Each of the Lives & Works exhibitions is subtitled with an
excerpt from a song or poem thus, over time, creating a compendium of
other people’s thoughts that have had resonance for the artist.
The
emotional nature of the exhibition’s subtitle is presented in stark
contrast to the work’s austerity, thus demarcating the range of
the subject matter that falls under the Lives & Works rubric.
