Zur Eröffnung der Berlin Biennale präsentiert Gitte Weise Galerie eine gastkuratierte Ausstellung neuer australischer Künstler.
Die in Melbourne lebende Kuratorin Hannah Mathews, bringt in SHOW ME YOUR WORLD die Arbeiten sieben australischer Künstler zusammen, die zuvor noch nicht in Berlin ausgestellt haben. SHOW ME YOUR WORLD versammelt diese Künstler rund um die Vorstellung von den Welten – insbesondere von ihren Welten, was sie definiert, was sie beschäftigt und was sie mit uns zu teilen bereit sind. Denkt man über die vielen Kulturen nach, die während der Biennale in Berlin aufeinander treffen, ermöglicht die Arbeit jedes einzelnen Künstlers einen Blick in die verschiedenen Welten, die um uns herum und in uns existieren. Hierzu zählen psychologische Gebiete, parallele Erzählungen, mythische Räume, Traumlandschaften und natürlich die Wunder der physischen Umwelt, in der wir leben. Den Fokus auf Sinne, Geschichte, Zeit und Ort gerichtet, ermutigt uns die Sammlung dieser Arbeiten dazu, die Art und Weise, in der wir die Welt um uns herum aufbauen, wahrnehmen und erfahren, anzuzweifeln.

SHOW ME YOUR WORLD zeigt unter anderem Irene Hanenberghs persönliche Zund-Drucke. Dunkel und psychedelisch in der Farbwahl und im Stil, fügen diese spektralen Formen Referenzen einer hohen Kunst, der Folklore und des persönlichen Archivs der Künstlerin zu mythologischen Landschaften zusammen. Auch Matthew Hunts Fotografien befassen sich mit der Landschaft, stehen jedoch im Kontrast zu ihrer sehr repräsentativen Aufnahme der australischen Landschaft, die mit einem Sinn für Lebendigkeit und Exotismus eingefangen wurde. Die Fotografien von Paul Knight führen uns in einen persönlicheren Bereich, mit Portraits knospender Philodendren, die als Metaphern für das ungeschickte, strebsame und oft konfliktbehaftete Verhalten junger Menschen fungieren.

Die Intimität dieser Bilder findet sich in den Videoarbeiten von Ms & Mr wieder, die uns einen kurzen Einblick in die sakrosankte Welt der Liebe geben. Ms & Mr, die seit 1999 zusammenarbeiten, nutzen die Verwirrung rund um ihre persönliche und kreative Partnerschaft als Ausgangspunkt für ihre Arbeit. Durch Manipulation des archivalischen Videomaterials mit ihrer eigenen romantischen Erzählung spielen die Künstler mit dem konventionellen Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum, um unmögliche gemeinsame Szenarien zu schaffen, die ein ewiges Zusammenleben ermöglichen. Ein Hauch von Verspieltheit ist im Bild von Del Kathryn Barton zu erkennen.
Für ihre sehr sorgfältig ausgeführten Illustrationen bekannt, untersucht Barton die Beziehung zwischen lebenden Dingen, wie zum Beispiel zwischen Mensch und Natur, und die geistigen Einflüsse der natürlichen Welt auf die physiologische und metaphysische Existenz der Menschheit.

Diese Beziehung wird in den Vinylarbeiten von Eleanor Avery auf den Kopf gestellt, die für die Dauer der Ausstellung die Fensterfront der Galerie schmücken. Mit der Vorstellung von Geschick und Schauspiel als Ausgangspunkt, entwirft Avery eine unsichere Landschaft, in der der Eingriff des Menschen das natürliche Gleichgewicht stört. Mit grellen Farben und klaren Linien ist diese Arbeit eine bedeutende Einleitung für die weiteren Arbeiten der Ausstellung.

SHOW ME YOUR WORLD trägt die Arbeiten sieben australischer Künstler zusammen, die verschiedene Techniken, Generationen, Kulturen und Interessen vertreten. Die Künstler wurden von der Kuratorin auf der Grundlage der Intensität und Überzeugung ihrer Arbeiten ausgewählt. Ein weiteres Kriterium war die Fähigkeit der Künstler, gemeinsam verschiedene aktuelle Interessen und Trends der australischen Kunst zu repräsentieren.
SHOW ME YOUR WORLD bringt diese aufstrebenden künstlerischen Talente zusammen, um so während der Biennale in Berlin eine starke und pulsierende australische Präsenz sicherzustellen.

To coincide with the opening of the 5th Berlin Biennale, Gitte Weise Gallery presents a guest-curated exhibition of new Australian artists.
Curated by Melbourne-based curator, Hannah Mathews, SHOW ME YOUR WORLD brings together the work of seven Australian artists not previously exhibited in Berlin. The exhibition gathers these artists around the idea of worlds – more specifically their worlds, what defines them, what occupies them and what they are willing to share with us. Reflecting on the number of worlds gathered in Berlin during the Biennale, the work of each artist offers a window into the many possible worlds existing around and within us, including psychological terrains, parallel narratives, mythical spaces, dreamscapes and of course the wonders of the physical environments we live in. Through a focus on the senses, history, time and place, this collection of works encourages us to question the ways in which we construct, perceive and experience the world around us.

SHOW ME YOUR WORLD includes Irene Hanenbergh’s intimate zund prints. Dark and psychedelic in their colouring and style, these spectral configurations conflate references from high art, folklore and the artist’s personal archive into mythological landscapes. Matthew Hunt’s photographs also deal with the landscape but stand in contrast with their firmly representational take of the Australian landscape, captured with a sense of vividness and exoticism. The photographs of Paul Knight take us into more intimate terrain, with portraits of budding philodendrons acting as metaphors for the awkward, aspirational and often conflicted behaviours of young men.

The intimacy of these images is echoed in the video works of Ms & Mr where we are offered a sneak peak into the sacrosanct sphere of lurve. Collaborating since 1999, Ms & Mr use the confusion surrounding their personal and creative partnership as a departure point for their work. By manipulating archival video footage with their own romantic narrative, the artists play with the conventional space-time continuum to create impossible shared scenarios that ensure a life together forever. A touch of whimsy is further through the painting of Del Kathryn Barton. Known for her highly elaborate illustrations, Barton explores the relationship between living things, such as man and nature, and the spiritual effects of the natural world on humankind’s physiological and metaphysical existence.

This relationship is turned upside down in the vinyl works of Eleanor Avery, which will emblazon the Gallery’s window frontage for the duration of the show. Using the concepts of artifice and spectacle as points of departure, Avery will contrive a precarious landscape in which human intervention disrupts a sense of natural balance. Comprised of fierce colour and sharp lines, this work will provide a significant introduction to the other works in the show.

SHOW ME YOUR WORLD will bring together the work of seven Australian artists who represent a range of media, generations, cultures and interests. The artists in SHOW ME YOUR WORLD have been selected by the curator based on the strength and conviction of their works, and their ability to collectively represent a diversity of current artistic interests and trends in Australia. SHOW ME YOUR WORLD brings these up and coming artistic talents together to ensure a strong and vibrant Australian presence in Berlin during the Biennale.
